Glissement AU: Separate Us

Stardate: September 1st, 2400, In an Alternate Timeline...

Henry was waiting for Anya as she got off shift. They hadn't worked a bridge shift together for several weeks, as Henry had some trust issues with most forms of childcare, though he’d relented when it came to schooling.

Anya was a minute later than expected. “I swear Ensign Notour is daydreaming sometimes. I had to repeat myself three times on report." She pecked Henry's cheek quickly.

Henry didn't respond to what she’d said. Instead, he handed her a PADD, without a word.

"What's this?” She grabbed it, and started reading. "But… how? How would they have found you?"

“They only want me for questioning, because they saw that I had contact with that ship for a long time,” Henry responded, swallowing hard. “But I just don't see how they can look into me, and not find you... unless I take the heat alone.”

Anya sat beside him. Her stomach twisted in knots. “I don't want you to. Sean just got you back.” She reached for his hand.

Henry squeezed it hard. “Anya... they kidnapped my kid and blackmailed me for five years. I have a good shot at winning, or at least getting a light sentence. But if even a word about this gets out about you... especially if they find out you were the one holding the phaser... it would end your career.”

A tear fell into her lap. “I don't want to be without you, parmaq." She leaned her head on his shoulder. “What do you need?"

Henry hugged her, hard. “I have one need, and one request.” He responded, letting the tears on his cheeks fall without trying to stop them. “I need for you to tell anyone who asks that I told you I needed to pick up Sean from his grandparents on Earth during our trip to Risa, and that I was gone for a week during our vacation, just like everyone on this ship believes. Stick to that story, and you shouldn't have any problems.”

Anya nodded, trembling. “I hope this works.” She hugged him just as hard. "I don't want to lose you.” Her tears joined his.

“I don't want to lose you, either, but if I'm going to deal with legal consequences for my actions, I am not dragging you down with me. You wouldn't have been there if it hadn't been for me.” Henry tried to tuck her into his arms, which was difficult as she was both taller and more muscular than he, but he tried anyway.

"I know,” her eyes drew closed tightly. She started to speak, but stopped herself a few times. "I don't like it. He was a murderer.”

“He was,” Henry agreed, “but you are a security officer for Starfleet. He was not an active threat when you shot him, he was comatose on a biobed. They would make an example of you so quickly you would never see the outside of a stockade again. I have a solid defense, and extreme provocation in that he endangered my child and threatened his safety if I did not obey him. Of course I would take an opportunity when presented with one. I might still serve time, but I will have a far better chance of parole than you ever would.” Henry’s statements were calm and reasoned; he had clearly been thinking about this for some time.

Anya nodded as she took a deep breath. “I know…” she barely whispered.

Henry hugged her tightly. “I’m sorry, parmaq.”

Eventually, Anya’s crying turned to just sniffles. “What do we tell Seany?”

“Well... that depends on your answer to my request,” Henry responded softly. “If I end up getting arrested, are you willing and able to look after him? I trust you with him more than anyone else in the universe, but parmaq... being a parent needs to be a voluntary and even enthusiastic task, and I would never want you to do it just because you feel obligated.”

“He just settled here. He needs some stability.” Anya sat up, looking Henry in the eyes. “Ever since I knew he existed, I’ve wanted to help you raise him.” She smiled genuinely. “That's why I went with you.”

Henry looked at her, and smiled a joyful, tearful, frightened smile. “By the stars but I love you.” He declared, before he kissed her like it was the first time.

Or the last.
