Henry packed lightly. He was technically on leave, and packed for a trip to Risa. He looked across at Anya, who was also packed. “Are you sure? You know my Starfleet career was forced on me, I don't care where it goes from here. But you stand to lose a lot more.”
Anya nodded solemnly. “I cannot let another child grow up without their parent if I can help it.” She grabbed her bag, taking another deep breath. “I can't send you to do this alone either. I'd rather be court martialed than lose you.” She crossed to him, squeezing his hand. “Let's bring him home."
It wasn't long after this that they were on a shuttle, ostensibly heading for Risa. In fact, they did go to Risa... and Henry left the homing device of their shuttle in their room that was booked for them, along with their com badges. They had left again only a few hours later, bound for the Neutral Zone. “We’re coming up on the coordinates now. I hope this shuttle is small enough not to attract attention.”
"Maybe he'll be too busy to notice.” Anya studied the console in front of her. " There's a ship dead ahead. Looks like the old medical freighter. You think that's it?" She turned to him.
“According to my contact, it is.” Henry swallowed hard. “The area he keeps his hostages in is shielded, we’ll need to board. Here,” he handed her a small device. “Press this twice and the shuttle will automatically beam you up. I've got one too, and one for Sean. Julian can be clever when he’s running on a plan, but he gets flustered when things take him by surprise. Think you can keep him occupied long enough for me to get Sean?”
“Of course," she smiled, patting her hidden blade. “It's like I trained my whole life for this."
“I know, and I know how capable you are. But all the same, be careful. I... wouldn't feel great, if I got you killed.” Henry admitted, his cheeks flushing.
“I would die with honor. Julian would die first though." Anya kissed his cheek. “I will be careful. I promise. Besides, I studied his ships, and I know them like the back of my hand."
Henry looked at her for a long moment, and then reached up and grasped Anya’s cheeks, kissing her hard. “Don't die.” He whispered. Then he beamed Anya to the other ship, near where Julian ought to be. He followed shortly, placing himself near the shielded area.
Anya got her bearings quickly. This was definitely the old medical ship and from the hallway formations, she knew she was just outside of a lab. She took a deep breath to focus as she listened for any other beings or conversation.
The halls were quiet, deserted; there did not even seem to be crew.
She knew there would be something in the lab. She set her phaser to kill and stepped in front of the door.
The door swished open to reveal... a very strange sight. A man who looked like Julian laid on a makeshift biobed, with two other Julians, each dressed like a nurse from the mid 20th century earth, and a Cardassian, who was trying to do... something. “Damned it, Julian, I’m a microbiologist, not a doctor. Well, I *am* a doctor. I have a doctorate, but it's not the same thing.”
Both Julians responded, “you must not wake the dreamer!”
The Cardassian snorted. “Yes, so you’ve said.”
Anya looked at the Cardassian, but steeled herself as she saw the Julians. She quickly fired her phaser at the nurse clones before they could react. Her phaser then started on the Cardassian. “Step away from the bed."
The Julians each melted, turning into familiar orange goo and metallic skeletons on the floor.
The Cardassian raised his hands and stepped aside, watching her with a tilted head.
Anya quickly shot the ‘Julian’ in the bed then trained the weapon on the microbiologist. "You have 30 seconds to say why I shouldn't kill you for aiding this murderer.” she growled.
The Cardassian held her gaze calmly. “He kidnapped my wife.” He responded, “and he would have killed her, had I not helped him.”
Anya gave a curt nod and lowered her weapon.
“I would like to go to that console,” the Cardassian nodded at a console across the room, “to search for my wife. May I?”
"Of course,” she brought her weapon to her side, but didn't holster it yet. “Will there be anymore of those clones or other defenses I should be aware of?”
“I doubt it, but I cannot promise.” The Cardassian moved slowly towards the console, keeping a wary eye on Anya and her phaser, “I am not a medical doctor, but I do know the signs of infection in cells. That man,” he nodded at Julian’s corpse, “had some kind of parasite. It produced the ability to create clones, but they were fragile; he created the metallic endoskeletons for them. Or perhaps the parasite created them for itself.” The Cardassian reached the console and began to search it, only the pinched look on his face betraying his anxiety.
“Are there other hostages on board? Would they be able to return home in this… ship?” Anya approached the console slowly, seeing if she could glean any information from it.
What she found the Cardassian looking at was a file not about a Cardassian woman, but about a Klingon half breed--and her destination of Earth, Kansas City, US, in the year 2377. The file named her as Asha Dejar.
“Your wife is Klingon?" Anya shook her head, remembering her mission. “Would you be able to get the hostages returned? I need to leave soon."
“No, my wife is... was... Cardassian as well. I am looking for our daughter, my wife was pregnant when she was taken.” The man responded softly. “I will do my best for the other hostages on board, most of them are in stasis a few levels below this one.”
“Good luck," Anya nodded, reaching for her transport device slowly. She froze when she saw the name Brunhilde Bagh.
"Who are you?” Anya’s voice grew quiet.
The Cardassian looked over at her. “My name is Lorill Dejar.”
"How do…” Anya stepped back slowly. "How do you know Ms. Brunhilde…" for once Anya looked almost scared.
“I do not know her, but my wife did. I know she trusted her.” Lorill responded softly, staring at Anya. “... if you know her, then you must be...” his eyes widened as he glanced from the file to Anya’s face. “Asha? Are you... are you her?”
"I am Anya…” she swallowed, studying the man in depth for the first time. "Anya Bagh.”
Lorill was staring back at Anya. “Anya. I’ve found you. I've finally found you!” He laughed, a few tears escaping his eyes.
Anya’s face twisted briefly before responding. "Is there anything else on the ship that will attack us?” Her eyes wet slightly, but she knew she had to protect Henry.
Lorill blinked, the reality of the situation hitting him again. “I... am uncertain.” He admitted, “and I do not know how people will respond now that he is dead. We should go to the bridge, at the very least I can access the roster, but I cannot do that from here.”
“Then lead the way. I don't know how long I have here, but I can watch our backs for a few minutes." Anya nodded him along.
Lorill led Anya to the bridge, glancing behind him every few seconds as if to make sure Anya was in fact there, and that he was not dreaming her. Once they arrived, they found every position on the bridge had a melted orange goo puddle slumped in the seats. Lorill cursed softly in Cardassian, and went to the small security console, gingerly moving a chair with its grotesque occupant out of his way before hacking into the system. “Since we are in the Neutral Zone and Romulans are none too fond of either of us,” Lorill stated, “you may want to check our surroundings, if you can.”
Anya scanned for any other ships, just barely noting the one she arrived on. She checked for lifesigns on the little ship.
She found about 250 lifesigns, but narrowing the search to those not in stasis produced only twenty, and most of those were near where Henry had gone. The little ship had two lifesigns on it.
“I can't do this alone. There are too many people.” Anya thought for a moment. "But we could set you adrift to federation space. They would help get the hostages home. If you are ok with it." She looked at Lorrill, grimacing. “I don't know how you feel about Starfleet though.”
“Whatever my personal feelings regarding them,” Lorill responded, slowly, “I would be a fool not to see that they have the resources and the will to aid this many people--something I would not trust Romulans to do. Or even other Cardassians, for that matter. What do I say of your involvement? I assume you do not have permission to be here; the Federation frowns upon murdering sick people in their hospital beds, as I recall.”
"Murdering a murderer and a kidnapper though, I have no qualms.” Anya answered coldly. "You are right. I shouldn't be here, but I needed to save my partner's son.” She looked at Lorrill, sadly. “I never expected to see anyone. No one that would live to tell the tale anyway.”
Lorill looked away. “I am glad you did not kill me,” he admitted, “but I would not have blamed you. Especially now, knowing who I am to you... and what I did to you.”
“You seem as affected by him as my Henry." She gestured to his scar. "I've seen Julian kill. He took away years, not just from me, but from many families,” she blinked back tears. "Whether or not you are my father, I can tell you love your family. I hope it to be true.”
“Ash--Anya... I will be in touch to explain everything to you, I promise.” Lorill told her, heartfelt. “But if you need proof, I will give you a sample of my blood, and you can have it tested yourself.”
Anya shook her head. "It is too risky.” She took another deep breath. "Once you are in federation space, request asylum. You should be able to find me at least. I serve aboard the USS Potemkin." She smiled and leaned forward, hugging him. “You are brave. I would be honored to be your daughter.”
Lorill hugged her back after a moment. “You are ruthless, but have a conscience. Anyone would be proud to be your parent.”
Anya smiled, hugging him quickly again before setting a course on the console.
"Stay on this course for about three hours. That should cross you into federation territory. When you get there, press this button to send a distress signal." Anya stood as she showed him the controls.
“Thank you,” Lorill told her. “Now that young man in the shuttle is probably wondering what is keeping you.”
“He should understand." Anya’s smile faded slightly. “Good luck, Dad." She tapped her transport device twice.
A shower of blue sparks surrounded her and whisked her away, depositing her gently on the shuttle, where Henry spun around and smiled in relief. “Anya! Thank the stars, are you alright?”
"Yes, but we have a slight change in plans.” She glanced at the ship. "Julian is dead, but my father is on the ship.”
“Your father?” Henry hesitated. “Is this a good thing or a bad thing?”
“I think it's good. He is going to take the ship to federation territory." Anya sat at the chair laying in a course back to Risa. “There are 250 hostages on that ship. Starfleet should help them find their way home." She turned back to Henry. “Your part of the mission was a success?"
“Yes, Sean is sleeping. I’ve told him a bit about you, he wants to meet you.” Henry told her, sitting in the copilot’s chair, glancing at her. “...you okay?”
“I think so. Still running on adrenaline… I never thought I would get the chance to shoot him." Anya shivered slightly. “Then meeting my possible father. It's still surreal."
“I can't imagine.” Henry responded. “What do you need?”
“To get rid of this phaser and these clothes, for starters. I still don't want to get caught.” Anya smirked.
Henry smiled as well, and after disposing of evidence, they made their way back to Risa.
