Hikaru Aston prefers to go by the nickname of Buck. While his parents were born in Japan, he himself was born aboard the USS DaVinci where his parents both served. While he has interest in his Japanese past, he doesn't consider himself Japanese hence why he prefers his nickname.

History

Born aboard the USS DaVinci, where his parents were stationed, Hikaru grew up around Starfleet and always wanted to be a Starfleet officer. He attended school aboard the Sovereign class DaVinci. As a true mother's son, he followed his mother into a career in medical.

While he was in the Academy, Hikaru excelled in his classes. He worked closely with another cadet to help perfect a nanoprobe technique for repairing heart valves. This technique replaced a more archaic method of using a laser and skin synthesis which would lead to scaring. The cadet he worked with was named Sarah Bransen and was working to become an engineering officer. The two built upon the professional relationship and during their final year at the academy they were planning on getting married.

Four weeks before the event was going to happen, a week before graduation, Sarah was killed during a final training exercise in which she, the engineer, was required to repair a shuttle during a flight. The shuttle malfunctioned and exploded.

Hikaru did poorly for the last week of the Academy, but his prior marks carried him through and he graduated in the middle of his class.

After graduation, Hikaru briefly requested grieving time and spent several weeks on Chateau Morimame in France where the retired Captain Jean-Luc Morimame (formerly the CO of the USS DaVinci) helped the young Starfleet Officer get over his lose and begin his tour of duty in Starfleet. Before leaving the Chateau, Hikaru received the tattoo above his right eye, a triple crescent moon, representing the Third Moon of Jupiter, where Sarah was born.

Morimame pulled a few of his strings and worked to help place Hikaru on the USS DaVinci with his parents. He spent a year aboard the DaVinci as a Security Officer until he was transferred to the USS Juno where he was a medical officer while the ship was stationed in Rashanar. While working on an away team removing bodies for the Rashanar Battle Site, Hikaru was buried under a collapsed bulkhead. He survived but was rewarded with a scar on his face.

Hikaru was aboard a shuttle doing surveying when the ship was destroyed by the Ontailians. He road back to earth aboard the Enterprise and was immediately transferred to Starbase 375 where he was a medical officer.

Not enjoying his time on the starbase, Hikaru requested a transfer to the USS Potemkin, which was approved and he was brought aboard as a medical officer.
