A fiery nebula and stellar nursery

The Yam'cherev, meaning Sea Sword, is a vaguely humanoid shaped, quasi-arthropod apex predator native to the large freshwater lakes on Tserra.

Its head has the appearance of a horseshoe crab, with four fluorescent blue eyes. Two situated to the front, allowing for binocular vision, and one on both sides of its head.

Entirely carnivorous the Yam'cherev has rows full of razor sharp teeth in its small slit like mouth.

It features two legs, and two arms, thus giving it its humanoid shape.

However that is where the similarities end. It has a tail which is primarily used for swimming, its entire body is covered in a thick chitin armor, akin to that of a crab or a lobster. Underneath this chitin armor the Yam'cherev has thick rubbery skin, which ranges in color from an off white, to coal black. The Yam’cherev does indeed have a skeleton, unlike Arthropods from Earth. It has three fingers on each of its bony hands, used for grappling, and manipulating objects, and prey.

Running the length of the forearm to the dorsal surface of the hand, there is a slight bulge, which has a small slit like opening covered by a thin, fast healing mucus membrane. Within these bulges is concealed a retractable bone blade which is 12-16 inches long, and roughly 1-2 inches wide, depending upon the individual. The edges of these blades are sharp enough to cut, but their primary purpose is for stabbing prey.

Yam’cherev do not have hemoglobin in their blood, but instead use Hemocyanin to carry oxygen. Because of the copper present in hemocyanin, their blood is blue. Their blood contains amebocytes, which play a role similar to white blood cells in defending the organism against pathogens.

Yam’cherev are semi-amphibious, capable of living extended periods outside of the water, they do however have to fully immerse themselves within three days of leaving the water, or they will die from dehydration.

Their typical life span is 15-30 years, their maximum lifespan is 60 years however.

They typically live in colony's of 150-300 individuals.

The Yam'cherev while not sentient, are highly intelligent, they have been shown to make tools and use them to acquire foods; they have been shown to be able to use doors, and other simple machines; they have been shown to display humor, and are capable of recognizing it; they have sophisticated hunting strategies requiring cooperation, influence and rank; they can recognize kin, and other members of their colony; they are status conscious, manipulative and capable of deception; they can learn to use symbols and understand aspects of language including some relational syntax, concepts of number and numerical sequence; and they are capable of spontaneous planning for a future state or event.

The Yam'cherev is considered a very real threat around Tserra’s lakes, and nearly 300 people are killed every year by them.
