A fiery nebula and stellar nursery

Tunguska Event, The

The Tunguska event, or Tunguska explosion, was an enormously powerful explosion that occurred near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Russia on Earth at about 7:14 a.m. on June 30, 1908.

The explosion was believed to have been caused by the air burst of a large meteoroid or comet fragment at an altitude of 5–10 kilometres (3–6 mi) above the Earth's surface, but indications from the Traveler Wesley Crusher imply that the explosion was the result of a warp core explosion. Crusher had been attempting to take a warp core breach as far away in space and time as he could from the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg in 1764. "I got about as far as Siberia and 1908," he later told the Potemkin crew. "Someplace called Tunguska." (TEM: "Indistinguishable from Magic, Part III")
